015_HOUSE-T_006_LD-1For their most recent and most outstanding project thus far, Ida and Billy created the Bridged House design that won them the Gold Award of the HKDA Global Design Award 2016. The aim of this project was two link together two existing houses from different eras with separate styles. This link needed to cross both generational gaps in regards to aesthetics and spatial awareness. The challenges in building this structure began at the very core of its foundation, the existing swimming pool acted as a natural segregation and the 3-meter height difference of the two houses created an imbalance. By making slight alterations to these fundamental problems the duo was able to unlock the hidden potentials of these presupposed flaws. 015_HOUSE-T_001_LD-1The key theme to building this structure revolved around the idea of connectivity instead of focusing on change and compromise – adopting one aesthetic over the other. Glass became the most obvious and fitting material to embrace this theme due to its neutral and compatible appearance. To combat the thermal insulating properties of glass in the city’s subtropical climate, insulated glazing and shades were installed to reduce heat. Air conditioning was positioned along the bottom of the bridge to produce a cooling effect at a human level. These three factors work together to decrease energy usage. houseT3a The enclosed walls of the swimming pool were taken down to allow water to overflow and trickle down its black stonewalls adding movement and life. Opening up the walls allows the swimming pool and the garden to merge, creating a stunning backdrop for the new focal point, the glass bridge. houset3 img_5_1454951641_3409e388c033669e35c3e7de75186d22 houseT2 Timber was used to tie together the different hues of both houses. Timber parapet-tops were added to highlight the houses neutral colours and in the interior of one of the homes, a timber stairway was added to create a sense of intimacy. This sense of intimacy was also reflected through the construction of the handrail along the stairwell. The shape of the handrail was made out of a foam mould of the client’s hand to emphasize a sense of touch and personalization. 1bAlthough the glass bridge steals the spotlight on initial contact, the most eye-catching piece is the fair-faced wall that runs around the house. The fair-face method celebrates the natural texture of concrete by moulding it over different surface finishes to create patterns. For House T, the duo moulded wood on top of the concrete to create a tree-like texture. The subtle nature of this fair-faced wall is an ode to those who can really appreciate the complexity of this technique and the understated beauty of its textured finish.
