Description
The design expresses Gary Chang's continued experiment in the extreme conditions of Tight Space, now a global phenomenon in high-density, hyper- urbanized environments. Unavoidably, it is also a biographical account of his domestic life from childhood until now, a testimony to the changes in his own needs and desires, lifestyle and design vocabularies. Five significant stages have been singled out, coded M-1976, M-1988, M-1989, M-1998, M-2007, and corresponding to his age at 14, 26, 27, 36 and 45. Though they appeared immensely divergent, they share a common theme: interactively putting all the essential and unexpected activities into this compact 32m2 space without compromise, with components that play 'hide and seek' with the inhabitant. It is a research into the smart use of resources, be it space, time or materials; into convenience and efficiency optimized for compact living.
